Lampropeltis triangulum triangulum
- Lampropeltis is derived from the Greek words lampros which means radiant and pelta which means small shields. This name refers to the snakes’ smooth scales, which reflect light well and appear shiny or “radiant.”
- Eastern milksnakes are native to Kane County but Mary was not taken from the wild. She was bred in captivity specifically for use as an education animal.
- Milksnakes and their close relatives the kingsnakes feed on rodents but also consume reptiles, including other snakes. Here at Hickory Knolls Mary does well on a diet of frozen, thawed mice.
